The film follows a Don of a Zamindar, Sriman (Puneeth Rajkumar) and his family being thrown out of the man's ancestral house due to his "less than honourable deeds". To retrieve the family's honour, he sets out to put to justice the real culprit behind the death of the Zamindar's only son.
Srimanthudu is the third instalment of .It is the first time that Koratala Siva has been a primary antagonist in his own production and his first film as director since Sankarabharanam in 2004.
The film was released on 29 January 2015. It was acclaimed for its background score and cinematography and went on to win two Filmfare Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Music Director. It was India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, which it lost to The accident, but was awarded a Special Mention by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Plot
Balaraju, a wealthy zamindar, is the father of Anand Rao and Lakshmi. He is also the adoptive father of Sriman. When Balaraju falls in love with Gayatri and plans to marry her, his wife Renu gets angry and goes to Gayatri's house. Renu tells Gayatri about Balaraju's feelings and gives her a letter. Gayatri reads the letter and is left heartbroken. Meanwhile, Renu tells Lakshmi about Gayatri's tears and orders Lakshmi to kill her. Lakshmi is upset with this and Renu finally understands what she has been doing. But Gayatri is murdered before Lakshmi can perform the ritual.
Sriman suspects that Gayatri's killing was orchestrated by Renu and he seeks to confront Renu. After much persuasion by Lakshmi, Sriman takes up Gayatri's case and vows to get justice for her. Sriman proves Balaraju's innocence by proving that the family isn't really close to him. Finally, Sriman asks Renu to confess. She says she never planned to marry Balaraju but did so out of duty. She also confesses to her murder of Gayatri.
